The scallop shell symbolizes a pilgrimage and the spiritual transformation along a pilgrim’s journey. The lines on a scallop represent the many different routes pilgrims take landing together at the center of spiritual discovery. I resonate with this metaphor after walking part of the Camino de Santiago with my sisters a few years ago. Scallops also hold a special meaning for me because of Nantucket where the shores are covered in scallop shells year-round. Every summer our family spends countless hours combing the beaches collecting hundreds of them.
